According to Ayurveda, there are Six taste or RASAS which are:
1. Sweet – Madhur
2. Salty – Lavan
3. Sour - Aml
4. Pungent - Katu
5. Bitter - Tikta
6. Astringent - Kashaya
Sweet is primarily considered as the most important of all six taste and is advised to be consumed in accurate quantity. But one more thing to be mentioned here is that Ayurveda means naturally sweet foods like –
MILK, GHEE, WHEAT, RICE and other grains as well as FRUITS, DATES, HONEY, JAGGERY.
I believe diabetes is not a disease but an imbalance of whole human system. So just lowering the sugar level in blood by strong chemical medicines or treating by Insulin is not the solution.
Maintaining or balancing the Dhatus (tissues) which built the human body is a most important part to treat diabetes.
Seven Tissues ( Sapta Dhatus)
1. Rasa – Plasma
2. Rakta- Blood
3. Maansa- Muscles
4. Meda – Fats
5. Asthi – Bones
6. Majja-Bone marrow
7. Shukra- Reproductive Tissues
Nowadays it is often seen that most of the (DM) Diabetes Mellitus patients end up with renal disease or multi organs failure. The root cause of this is not just sugar levels in blood but the ignored ADR factor (adverse drug reaction).
So again coming to Madhur Rasa (Sweet Taste ), which gives strength to each Dhatu of the body, it becomes necessary for the patient to have natural, healthy and appropriate quantity of sweet in the diet.
Ayurveda considers DM as an imbalance of KAPHA in the body, which declines the activity of AGNI and leads to an increase in blood sugar level.
Since Ayurveda considers diabetes mainly an excess of Kapha Dosha , it recommends a Kapha – pacifying diet to keep diabetes under control.
One should always keep in mind that an ayurvedic dietary prescription takes many factors into accounts, such as age, body constitution, season and other environmental and social factors, so a consultation with an experienced ayurvedic specialist is necessary to make specific individual recommendations.
According to Ayurveda, there are 24 forms of diabetes.
Four caused by VATA DOSHA,
Six caused by PITA DOSHA,
Ten caused by KAPHA and
Rest by TRI DOSHA (VATA, PITA, KAPHA).
If Diabetes is in hereditary, person should be careful about diet from teenage. Should not get worried about the disease But be conscious about lifestyle and bad eating habits. Just by managing daily routine, our food and Workout we can delay or totally eliminate the disease from familyIt is important to mention here that seeing an advertisement or any label showing all sorts of bitter herbs, is not at all advisable for any individual to start it as medicine for DM.
One should consult an ayurvedic specialist for proper guidance.
In Ayurveda; DM is treated with multiple procedures by advising the patient with a diet plan; according to body constitution; changes in lifestyle and dietary precautions.
